One Year Ordination Birthday

Today, August 15, 2011 is my one-year ordination birthday!

August 1, 2011 was my one-year at Knox birthday, which was surreal to think that I’ve been in Naperville for a year and survived one winter.

Being a Minister of Word and Sacrament is an awesome privilege and responsibility.  When I felt called to be a minister in the 8th grade, I wanted to be ordained then and there.  I wanted to skip college and go straight to seminary.  It wasn’t until late in college that I started to realize that God’s call on my life to ordained ministry wasn’t a race but was a process.  It was about the finished person, thus, a year in Kenya and a more healthy approach to ordination and life.  That’s the thing; I’m not a finished person and never will be while I’m alive.  God’s lifelong call for us is not to race to the finish line, but to view life as a process.  And that takes a lifetime and makes us ask some big questions:

  • What do I spend most of my time thinking about?
  • What do I spend my time doing?
  • Where do I spend my money?
  • Am I rushing through life or am I enjoying it?

God has given me the opportunity to officiate at weddings, funerals, and baptisms.  These have been really powerful experiences for me during the past year.  Life beginning, lives merging together, and life ending.  This reminds me of the song lyrics, “There’ll be two dates on your tombstone – and everyone’s gonna read ‘em – but all that really matters – is that dash in between ‘em – it’s a great big world – life down here on earth.” (Kevin Welsh)

I look forward to God continuing to form and mold me and those God brings into my life as The Potter does with the clay.  And every day, I will continually pray for the strength and wisdom to not dry up.

Update: As I was writing this, my family called me on Skype from Oklahoma and sang to me “Happy Ordination Day.”  I wish they were more supportive of me, gosh.
